Where other design styles come into and go out of fashion, the functional but sleek Nordic style of Scandinavian interiors isn't showing any signs of slowing down. But just what is a Scandi style living room, and how can you create your own version?
How do I get the Scandinavian look?
The Scandinavian style lounge was born from a need to create a cosy and comfortable, yet practical living space that provided relief from the tough winters in countries like Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. Interestingly, it was also used to maximise the sense of light and space in rooms where you would spend a lot of time throughout darker parts of the year.
Scandinavian inspired style really took off in the middle of the 20th century, in the 1950s and 60s. The simple but beautiful designs, characterised by clean lines and block colours chimed with a more modern outlook then started taking hold in Western Europe and eventually in the US.
The main elements of a Scandinavian style living room are muted neutral colours, commonly used to help to increase the sense of light and space. Accent colours can be bolder but the main furniture elements tend to be classic block hues in beige, grey or tan.

How a Scandinavian style sofa can make the look
Perhaps the most important element of any Scandinavian-inspired living room is the sofa, which should be designed with clean, straight lines (there's no frills around here).
Decluttered space is a big key to this interior style, so keep your living room design simple and clean. This isn't the trend for intentional clashing, so you should try to incorporate similar textures of pine, plywood and teak when it comes to coffee tables and side tables.
The aim of a Scandi lounge is to create a peaceful, practical and comfortable living space. The modern world can be hectic, and the introduction of this timeless style into your home is guaranteed to bring a little bit of peace by creating your own sensory sanctuary.
Building your Scandinavian-inspired design
